What has the Nevis School Board been doing for the last six months, sitting on their hands waiting for another bond issue or trying to solve the overcrowding problem another way? One way to solve the problem is by not accepting more students. They just compound the problem by allowing more open enrollment students to come into our district.
I am not opposed to open enrollment, because if the district would not have these students, as one school board member put it, Nevis School District might not exist.
I am opposed to overcrowding our existing facility with students from other districts. If our facility is designed to accommodate 450 to 475 students, they should not overcrowd it with 500 or more students and then expect the voters to pay for the problem they created.
I was at the steering committee meeting Oct. 12. Most of the comments I heard were that the addition would make it more convenient for staff. Nevis is graduating fine students with the existing facility and operating within their budget.
Voters of Nevis School District: Be ready for another bond issue and for more money than last time. After four bond defeats, one would think they would try to solve the problem another way. Be at the next school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23.
