Medicinal marijuana advocates listed

Due to space concerns, my letter responding to Mr. Anderson, published in the Oct. 9 edition had to be edited considerably. In that trimming, some important factors were omitted.

My intent is simply to advocate federal agencies cease from abridging states' rights, targeting suffering patients and legal medical distribution centers. We may gain "sound medical findings" if these states are allowed to run their programs. Certainly, if the patients are finding the medicine effective and doctors are monitoring the usage, it deserves consideration.

I'm not alone. Here's a partial list of health organizations which have advocated legal access to medicinal marijuana:

AIDS Action Council, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Nurses Association, American Preventive Medical Association, American Public Health Association, American Society of Addiction Medicine, Lymphoma Foundation of America, The Montel Williams MS Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Society (Canada), Multiple Sclerosis Society (United Kingdom), National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM), National Association for Public Health Policy, National Nurses Society on Addictions, Alaska Nurses Association, California Academy of Family Physicians, California Nurses Association, California Pharmacists Association, Colorado Nurses Association, Connecticut Nurses Association, Florida Medical Association, Hawaii Nurses Association, Illinois Nurses Association, Life Extension Foundation, Medical Society of the State of New York, Mississippi Nurses Association, New Jersey State Nurses Association, New Mexico Medical Society, New Mexico Nurses Association, New York County Medical Society, New York State Nurses Association, North Carolina Nurses Association, Rhode Island Medical Society, Rhode Island State Nurses Association, San Francisco Mayor's Summit on AIDS and HIV, San Francisco Medical Society, Vermont Medical Marijuana Study Committee, Virginia Nurses Association, Whitman-Walker Clinic (Washington, DC), Wisconsin Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association and Wisconsin State Medical Society (just to name a few).

Recently a poll of AARP members also showed a clear majority are in favor of allowing medicinal use of marijuana.

Perhaps all their motives are questioned as well?
