John "Bill" Rode, 90, of Park Rapids, formerly of Walker, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.
He was born March 13, 1918 in Ryder, N.D. to Paul and Annette (Jensen) Rode. As a child he moved with his family to Walker, where his parents owned and operated the Lake Café. He attended public school in Walker, graduating with the class of 1936. He attended the University of North Dakota, and graduated with a degree in chemistry.
He joined the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, he began worked as a chemist for the Glidden Co. in Cleveland, Ohio.
Following his retirement, he returned to the Walker area where he made his home on Kabekona Bay of Leech Lake.
He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Walker and later Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids.

He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Dorothy and Lorraine; and one brother, Donald.
Funeral service: Friday, Nov. 7 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen officiating.
Casket bearers: Jim Schuett, Walter Anderson and Kevin Hillberg.
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery in Walker.
