Hubbard County is under a winter storm watch today through Tuesday, with more snow on the way.

"At this time there's the potential for 6 or more inches of snow," said National Weather Service meteorologist Tom Grafenauer.

"What it looks like is there's going to be a band of snow across southeast North Dakota into west central Minnesota and within this band it appears there's going to be the potential for 6 or more inches with lesser amounts on either side of the central portion, the heaviest band of snow.

"The heaviest snow will occur late tonight or early Tuesday morning with light snow continuing into Tuesday afternoon."

That puts Park Rapids on track to break a December snowfall record. But because the area lacks what NWS calls cooperating observers, unofficial compilers of weather records, the Service uses the nearest official recorder, Fargo.

"The closest that I know of for you guys is Fargo and right now Fargo sits at 24.5 inches and 29.2 inches would be the snowiest December since 1927," Grafenauer said, "so it's 4.7 inches behind the record."
