Polk County authorities are warning of a scam that involves supposedly discounted asphalt, and now Hubbard County Sheriff Frank Homer wants local residents to be vigilant of a similar scam.

Polk County authorities are warning of a scam that involves supposedly discounted asphalt, and now Hubbard County Sheriff Frank Homer wants local residents to be vigilant of a similar scam.

According to a news release from the Polk County sheriff's office, several residents of Polk County have been approached by someone who claimed to represent a firm working on a nearby road. The suspected scammer offers to pave a driveway at a reduced cost, then partially completes the job before billing more than the initial quote and asking for even more to finish.

Residents are asked to call the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department at (218) 732=3364 if they are contacted by the company.

"You know what they do when they're kicked out of one county?" Homer asked. "They just move on. That's why we want to get the word out. I got a teletype from Polk County warning us."

Those who have been targeted have been told the company is from Minnesota, either Duluth or Eagan. The firm's representatives have identified the company as being named Asphalt, but they weren't able to produce a business license or list a street address.
