For the families of local deceased veterans, funeral services can be provided right here in town. A trip to the nearest military base in Grand Forks isn't necessary.
The American Legion Honor Guard provides proper military service for veterans in Park Rapids, Nevis, Akeley and other neighboring towns.
"Our job is to provide the military honors for the deceased veterans in lieu of the active military," said captain Dave Traxler.
The Honor Guard sends four members to each funeral service: a bearer of the American flag, one for the Post flag and the two remaining guards fold and present the flag that is draped over the casket and folded 13 times.
The guards practice folding the flag for an hour every month in order to maintain the appropriate level of the presentation at the ceremonies.

"Folding the flag is an art in itself," Traxler said.
He emphasized the importance of practice and added that he still gets nervous before presenting the flag.
"It's very important to that widow or that son or daughter that we properly honor their veterans," Traxler said.
Members of the Honor Guards have also served in the military; from the Army and Air Force to the Navy and the Marines.
It's been around for many years, but about two years ago, the honor guard saw a need to improve its image by investing in new uniforms for all 22 members.
"Members had different colored blue pants and shirts that were faded or discolored," honor guard Vern Massie said. "That's not really the image we wished to present."
A number of the volunteers stepped up and the Post purchased each volunteer a complete uniform with a cap, shirt, trousers, shoes and gloves.
"Uniform is the key to this, it could be any four people on any given day," Traxler said.

In addition to funeral services, honor guards participate in town parades, Memorial Day service and Veterans Day, which is coming up in November.
