Gymnasts finish 6th in section

Perham won its ninth straight title, Detroit Lakes finished second for the ninth year in a row and Park Rapids placed sixth at Saturday's Section 8A gymnastics meet at Detroit Lakes.

Emily Klingenberg led the Panthers on uneven parallel bars with a 6.875 and finished 18th in all-around with a 29.375 at Saturday's Section 8A meet.

Perham won its ninth straight title, Detroit Lakes finished second for the ninth year in a row and Park Rapids placed sixth at Saturday's Section 8A gymnastics meet at Detroit Lakes.

Perham, the top-ranked Class A team in the state and the state champion the last seven years, compiled 148.688 points to defeat Detroit Lakes' 144.50 for the section title. Park Rapids finished with a 109.125 to place sixth in this seven-team meet.

Emily Klingenberg had the Panthers' top finish by placing 13th in vault with an 8.30. Jessi Andersen's 8.05, Sarena Kinkel's 7.70 and Kayla Johnk's 7.45 led to a 31.50 team score in that event. Perham's Kelsi Vomacka had the top individual score with a 9.65.

The Panthers received a 28.25 in floor exercise behind Andersen's 8.05, Klingenberg's 7.20, Savannah Gatewood's 6.55 and Kayla Andersen's 6.45. Vomacka led the way with a 9.688.

On balance beam, the Panthers used Lauren Rossman's 7.35, Jessi Andersen's 7.25, Klingenberg's 7.00 and Kinkel's 6.25 for a 27.85 team score. Detroit Lakes' Jessica Stelter won the section title with a 9.65.

The Panthers received a 21.525 on uneven parallel bars with Klingenberg's 6.875, Jessi Andersen's 6.70, Kinkel's 5.30 and Amy Klein's 3.75 leading the way. Detroit Lakes' Amy Crawford led the field with a 9.80.

Vomacka won the all-around title with a 38.438. Jessi Andersen finished 14th with a 30.05 while Klingenberg was 18th with a 29.375.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the state Class A meet, which will be held Saturday at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.
