A Grafton woman accused of locking children under the age of 10 in dog cages was released from the Grand Forks jail on bond Friday. Jordan McKay Nelson, 23, was charged with four counts of child abuse or neglect and four counts of felonious restraint, all felonies, after four children, the youngest of whom is 5, told forensic interviewers Nelson would place them in dog kennels as punishment, according to the criminal complaint. The children - ages 5, 6, 8 and 9 - told interviewers Nelson would put them in dog kennels in the basement of their Grafton home with the lights off, the complaint said. The children were not Nelson's, but her partner's children. One of the children, an 8-year-old girl, said Nelson forced her 6-year-old brother to eat dog food, causing him to vomit, according to the complaint. Another child, a 9-year-old boy, told interviewers he was put in the cage when he wouldn't listen, according to the complaint. During the interview, he drew a picture of himself in the dog kennel with the words "Help me" next to him, the complaint said. "The previously stated actions are also enough to cause permanent mental injury to the juveniles," the complaint said. The court ordered Nelson to stay away from the children. She is scheduled to next appear in court April 13
