Township meetings are March 12

Townships will hold their annual meetings Tuesday, March 12.

The annual meeting is a gathering of town residents, not the town board. At this meeting, residents have a direct voice in how their township will be run. They do this by voting on a variety of matters on which the town board must receive elector approval — most importantly, the township's levy for the next year. With limited exceptions, the town board can only spend what has been authorized by the voters.

Town board members may vote as residents, make motions and provide information, but the supervisors cannot legally take actions as the town board.

At their annual meeting, several townships also elect their board members to staggered, three-year terms, and their town clerk or treasurer to a two-year term.

Other townships hold their elections in November, in which case the board members are elected to four-year terms and elections are held in alternating years. These townships must still conduct the annual meeting in March.

Townships are the original form of local government in Minnesota, established as part of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Township government, a carryover from Europe, served as a building block to organize the state by dividing land areas into 36-square-mile units.

In the event of inclement weather, the annual township meetings will be postponed to Tuesday, March 19.
