Two incumbents and a new face will serve new terms on the Menahga School Board.

Former teacher and athletic director Brad Goehrig received most of the votes in Tuesday's election winning one of the three open seats at 20.46 percent.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge and I hope I can meet everybody's expectations," Goeherig said.

Five-year incumbent Durwin Tomperi will serve another term. He received 20.15 percent of the votes.

Current school board treasurer Curtis Hasbargen won re-election at 17.78 percent, closely defeating Joyce Skoog, who received 17.01 of the votes.

Former Menahga City Council member Julia Kicker received 15.76 percent of the votes and former Menahga School Board member Donovan Dulski received 8.53 percent.

Goehrig taught social studies and history in Menahga for 14 years and was the athletic director for 15 years before retiring in 2005. He's now coaching the Menahga and Sebeka joint junior high football team.

On his agenda as the newest board member is to have more interaction with students and staff in a more friendly and positive environment.

"Being a teacher for so many years, I really enjoyed the kids," he said.

When it comes to rising enrollment numbers and talks of a new building project, Goehrig said he'll have a complete and better understanding of the issue once he takes office and is able to review detailed information and the budget.

But for now, he said more businessmen, farmers and other taxpayers in the community should get involved in the decisions that will be made by the board.

"We need to worry about the economy and whether we can afford it or not," Goehrig said. "It has to be presented honestly to the district."

To review facility needs, the board will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Menahga High School media center.

More involvement from parents of students in the community will be needed to further boost test scores, Goehrig said.

He added that Menahga has been on the right track, but there will always be room for improvement.

"Everybody has to be on the same page," he said. "The kids also have to want to get better."
