Flooding the rink

A sheen of water covers a layer of ice on the Nevis community skating rink. Volunteers are flooding it layer by layer to get a perfect sheet of ice. The community was outraged this week when would-be vandals - or possible burglars - tried to kick their way through the warming house door. They were unsuccessful. Cold weather will speed up the ice-making process and soon, skaters will glide around it. The rink was built with volunteer labor. Dozens of residents have pitched in. (Sarah Smith / Enterprise)
