The Park Rapids Fire Department responded to a fire Friday afternoon at a tiny log cabin located near the corner of Fair Ave. and Third St. W. in Park Rapids.

According to a news release, local American Red Cross volunteers connected the family of two adults and two children with essential items, such as food, clothing, shelter and other assistance.

Park Rapids Assistant Fire Chief Ben Cumber said no one was at the home when firefighters arrived on scene around 3 p.m. Feb. 5.

The fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters also responded to a chimney fire north of Park Rapids Saturday. Temps were 25 below zero. “It was terrible cold,” Cumber said. “It’s a challenge too keep all the water in all the trucks from freezing and the pipes. There’s a lot of shields and covers you have to put on in the winter. A lot of the trucks have heaters inside the pumps to help to keep things from freezing, but it still happens.”
