Crews from the Verndale Fire Department and the Wadena Fire Department were working to knock down a grass fire just before noon on Tuesday, just southeast of England Prairie Pioneer Club grounds.

The report of the fire came in around 11:30 a.m. at the location of 10732 141st Ave. in Verndale. Initially Verndale Fire Department responded to the blaze, which was working across a corn field of mostly corn stubble. Shortly after arrival they called Wadena Fire Department to respond to the east side of the fire. The fire was headed towards a wooded area, and some structures.

Crews remained on scene as of 12:30 p.m. Also on scene were Wadena County Sheriff and Verndale Police.

Before 1 p.m., a helicopter dropped water on the fire, assisting in stopping the spread.
