Fire blazes across corn field Tuesday morning near Verndale

Crews from the Verndale Fire Department and the Wadena Fire Department were working to knock down a grass fire just before noon on Tuesday, just southeast of England Prairie Pioneer Club grounds.

Crews from the Verndale Fire Department and the Wadena Fire Department were working to knock down a grass fire just before noon on Tuesday, just southeast of England Prairie Pioneer Club grounds.

The report of the fire came in around 11:30 a.m. at the location of 10732 141st Ave. in Verndale. Initially Verndale Fire Department responded to the blaze, which was working across a corn field of mostly corn stubble. Shortly after arrival they called Wadena Fire Department to respond to the east side of the fire. The fire was headed towards a wooded area, and some structures.

Crews remained on scene as of 12:30 p.m. Also on scene were Wadena County Sheriff and Verndale Police.

Before 1 p.m., a helicopter dropped water on the fire, assisting in stopping the spread.
