Police here are investigating whether the driver of a car that hit and seriously injured a woman Tuesday did so intentionally or accidentally.

A passenger car struck the 36-year-old Fargo woman about 8:45 a.m. as she was walking on the street in the 1600 block of Third Avenue South, near Jefferson Elementary School, Sgt. Mark Lykken said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to MeritCare Hospital to be treated for cuts to her back and side, facial lacerations and possible internal injuries, Lykken said.

Police were able to talk to the woman, as well as another witness to the incident, Lykken said.

"The driver is possibly an acquaintance of hers, and at this time we don't know if it was an accident or an intentional act," he said.

If it was intentional, the driver could face charges ranging from aggravated assault to attempted murder, he said.
