The 2021-22 school year is underway, with classes starting Tuesday, Sept. 7 in most local schools.
Park Rapids Area Schools
Total K-12 enrollment at Park Rapids Area Schools was 1,628 on the first day of school, compared to 1,573 last year.
At Century Elementary School, the school year started with 616 students, 16 more than last year. That included 125 kindergartners, 120 in first grade, 130 in second, 117 in third and 124 in fourth grade.
Century Middle School opened the year with 501 students, a decrease of four since last year. There were 129 fifth graders, 123 sixth graders, 135 seventh graders and 114 eighth graders.
Park Rapids Area High School had an opening-day enrollment of 511, up from 468 last year. Among them were 153 freshmen, 119 sophomores, 143 juniors and 96 seniors.
Enrollment numbers for the voluntary pre-kindergarten, early childhood program and Alternative Learning Center were not available at press time.
Superintendent Lance Bagstad said the start of the school year went well. “It was exciting to see students, staff and parents happy and smiling as they came into the school buildings,” he said. “The enrollment numbers are looking strong, as they are the highest in the past couple of years.
“We look forward to a good year of learning and providing opportunities for all students to grow and be successful.”
Menahga School District
As of opening day, the total student body at Menahga was 1,031 compared to last year’s 887.
Menahga Elementary School (K-5) began the 2021-22 school year with 438 students. Pre-kindergarten has 39 children enrolled.
Menahga High School (6-12) has 554 students this fall.
Superintendent Kevin Wellen said, “We are up about 160 students from last year's low point. It was great to see our building at the capacity it was built for. The place was buzzing with energy. A big thank you to everyone for their flexibility and patience as we get back to our ‘old normal’ with some new twists. We are off to a great start!”
The Laporte School had a total enrollment of 364 on Tuesday, up from last year’s first-day enrollment of 345.
The school had 37 preschool students, including 11 in the 3-year-old class and 26 in the 4-year-old class.
Laporte’s elementary school (K-5) had a total enrollment of 157, with 18 kindergartners, 34 in first grade, 25 in second, 28 in third, 33 in fourth and 19 in fifth grade.
The middle school (grades 6-8) had 80 students, with 23 in sixth grade, 27 in seventh and 30 in eighth grade.
The high school (grades 9-12) brought in 90 students total, with 25 freshmen, 25 sophomores, 22 juniors and 18 seniors.
Nevis Public Schools
Enrollment numbers at Nevis School were not available since the first day for elementary students was Thursday. Their enrollment numbers will be reported next week. Pre-K students begin classes Sept. 13-14.
