Students, families throng Century open house

Students and their families dropped off school supplies, found their desks and lockers, met teachers, and explored their learning environment for the upcoming school year during the back-to-school open house Wednesday at Century School in Park Rapids.

Vehicles overflowed the school parking lot and lined the curb on Helten Avenue and Monico Lane during the event.

Besides a first look at their new classrooms, students also had opportunities to browse a used book giveaway, encounter representatives of organizations like the Cub Scouts and the Hockey Association, and tour outdoor play areas.

Each grade at Century Elementary School (K-4) learns in a "pod" of classrooms separated from the other grades, with their own common area for larger-group activities or lockers.

At Century Middle School, grades 5-6 and grades 7-8 learn together in three pods each. Each pod has its own set of core curriculum classrooms, allowing students in each grade to move from subject to subject as a group.

There was also a ninth-grade orientation Wednesday evening at Park Rapids Area High School.
