Detroit Lakes' Mike Berg has taken a big step in his professional golf career after earning a berth in the upcoming U.S. Open golf championship.

Berg, who is 31, birdied the Par 5 playoff hole Monday at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan. The birdie was enough to win the 522-yard playoff hole, which was his 37th hole of the day.

The DL native rebounded with an afternoon three-under par 67 after shooting a three-over 73 Monday morning, which put him in a playoff hole for the lone spot open out of the 22-man sectional tournament. The qualifier was one of 12 held throughout the U.S.

Berg will now play in the prestigious U.S. Open, which will be held at the Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, Pa. Monday-Sunday, June 11-17.

Another Minnesota native and the 1996 British Open champion, Tom Lehman, failed to qualify for the U.S. Open, as did two-time major champion Mark O'Meara, John Daly and Brad Faxon.
