David Paul Sherbert, 32, of 123 East Willow St., Detroit Lakes has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime, possession, and misdemeanor domestic assault.

According to court records:

On Thursday about 12:02 a.m., Detroit Lakes police officers were called to Sherbert's house on the report of a domestic assault.

They allegedly found a female identified by the initials A.W. with a bump on the left temple, scratches on her upper back, cuts to her left arm, redness on her neck, a golf ball-sized lump on the back of her head, a bruised left foot, marks on her right foot, and a pronounced limp in her left leg.

She said she came home that evening and her boyfriend -- Sherbert -- began arguing with her, then allegedly threw her down a flight of stairs.

Once downstairs, he allegedly forced her into a closet and began hitting her with a piece of bamboo railing that had broken off the stairwell.

He allegedly continued to throw her around until friends arrived and called the police. At the jail, he was allegedly found in possession of two pill bottles, one with what appeared to be marijuana and one containing 27 Xanax pills prescribed to A.W.

He appeared before District Judge Peter Irvine on Friday, who set bail or bond at $20,000 and ordered him to have no contact with A.W. His next court appearance is set for Aug. 24.
