Dean Hiram Vogtman, 79, of the Park Rapids area died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007 at Heritage Living Center of cancer.

He was born Oct. 28, 1927 in Hubbard Township to Ed and Clara (Hills) Vogtman. He attended country school at the Dist. 3 Stoney Lake Schoolhouse. He attended Central High School in Park Rapids through ninth grade. He entered the US Navy in 1945, attending basic training at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Depot. He was stationed at a Naval base in Davisville, RI then at Port Hueneme in Oxnard, CA. He served in the 7th Special Bridge and Cause-way Battalion. After World War II, he returned to Park Rapids.

He married Marie Cunningham June 3, 1948. He worked for Isaacson's Bottle Gas for many years. In 1961, he began working at the Park Rapids Post Office as a clerk and then as a postmaster. He retired in 1988.

He was active in the Knights of Columbus, Na-tional Rifle Association and Eagles Club and was a life-time member of the Ameri-can Legion. He was also a member of the Civil Air Pa-trol, receiving recognition for finding a lost young boy and an airplane that had gone down. He was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

He is survived by four children, Cheryle (Dennis) Coughlin of Rosemount, Thomas (Trudee) of Park Rapids, Caryl Cunningham of Maplewood and Theresa Hanson of Dothan, AL; sis-ter, Alma Malm; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numer-ous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife earlier this year, a sister, four brothers and two nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. today (Saturday) at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with Fa-ther David Super officiating. The organist will be Helen Fisher and the soloist is Fran Gack.

Honorary casketbearers: Granddaughters Tracy Vogtman, Leah Letson and Jolie Anderson.

Active casketbearers: Grandsons Dean T. and Philip Vogtman, Ryan Coughlin, Brandon Herbert, Jeffery and Tyler Cunning-ham.

Interment: St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials preferred to Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.
