Charley Edward McDermeit Jr., 78, of Menahga died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006.

He was born Oct. 13, 1927 to Charley and Irene (Noble) McDermeit Sr. in Becker County. He grew up on sev-eral farms in the Menahga area.

He married Carol Pauline Pederson June 5, 1949 at her parent's home. From 1951 to 1953, he worked in the iron ore mines near Keewatin and Hibbing. In September 1953, they returned to Menahga and farmed the family farm. He also worked for Herb Stone at Snowfence Mill, Tom Murphy's North Star Lumber and Minnesota Forest Products.

He is survived by two daughters, Irene Chandler and Marie Wortiska, both of Menahga; sister-in-law, Lois McDermeit; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, Edward C. and Clarence H.; son-in-law, Milton Wortiska; five brothers and five sisters.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the church.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 at First English Lutheran Church in Menahga with Rev. Steven A. Bruer officiating. Organist and soloist will be Robin Allebach-Knapp singing "The Lord's Prayer." Congregational hymns will be "The Old Rugged Cross," "Sweet Hour of Prayer," "When the Role is Called Up Yonder" and "Rock of Ages."

Honorary casketbear-ers: Nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Active casketbearers: David and Ernest Patson, Eugene Tate, Keith and William Meyer, Dudley McDougel, Chris and Ernie Cowden.

Interment: Menahga City Cemetery.
