The general manager of Thumper Pond Resort says it may be weeks before it’s known what caused the catastrophic collapse of the roof over the lodge’s water park just before midnight Tuesday.
Brad Stevens said in an emailed statement that the resort reopened Thursday after being cleared by the Minnesota Department of Health and the fire marshal.
He said all of the lodge’s amenities are operating, except for the Northern Hideaway Indoor Waterpark and the Serene Woods Spa. He said rebuilding would begin as soon as possible.
Building codes not enforced where Thumper Pond was built
“While the loss at Thumper Pond is significant, we are very fortunate that this happened outside of our waterpark operation hours and that no one was injured. We are working with forensic engineers to find the cause of this event; the results of the investigation will likely not be known for many weeks,” Stevens said.

The guest rooms, restaurant, golf pro shop and conference center were not damaged in the collapse, but areas adjoining the waterpark suffered significant water damage, Stevens said.
“We are committed to the safety of our guests and team members, and as a precautionary measure we closed the resort (Wednesday) to secure the area and bring in structural engineers to review the other buildings on property and provide assurance of their integrity,” Stevens said.
Stevens said the company that owns Thumper Pond was committed to keeping all employees working through the rebuilding process.
The water park was opened in 2006.
