Berg's 17 kills power W-DC?past Panthers

Brigetta Berg's 17 kills and the serving of Courtney Volkmann led Wadena-Deer Creek to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-7 Mid-State Conference volleyball victory over Park Rapids Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

In Game 1, two tips by Hannah Wolff and kills by Leeza Tostenson and Olivia Vaadeland gave Park Rapids a 6-5 lead. After W-DC went on a 16-8 run, two kills by Hailey Lundin kept the Panthers within 23-18 before W-DC closed out the game.

Kills by Wolff and Lundin gave the Panthers a quick 3-0 lead in Game 2 before Brittney Noon served seven straight points to give W-DC a 9-3 lead. A spike by Lundin, a block by Vaadeland and an ace serve by Lundin kept Park Rapids within 21-14 before the Wolverines went on a 4-0 run to end that game.

Lundin and Tostenson had kills to open Game 3, but Volkmann served seven consecutive points as W-DC took a 10-2 lead. After a block by Vaadeland and kill by Lundin made it 15-6, the Wolverines closed out the match with a 10-1 run.

Offensively, Maria Goetz had nine set assists as Lundin had six kills and Hannah Wolff had two kills. Shelby Weckwerth had eight digs and Tostenson had seven digs defensively as the Panthers fell to 1-7 overall in the conference opener for both teams.

The win lifted W-DC to 1-1 on the season. The Wolverines were rated No. 13 in last week's state Class AA poll.
