BEMIDJI - Prosecutors filed a felony assault charge Tuesday against a Hibbing man accused of stabbing his mother in the face with a pair of scissors.
Kevin Lee Lumbar, 37, was charged Tuesday in Beltrami County District Court with felony third-degree assault, causing substantial bodily harm.
The maximum penalty is five years in jail with a $10,000 fine.
According to court papers:
Lumbar, his mother and two others went to an area bar Sunday night and returned to an apartment above 422 15th St. NW. Bemidji police officers were dispatched to the apartment at 4:30 a.m. Monday in response to a stabbing report.

A male there reported that Lumbar had stabbed his mother in the face with a pair of scissors. A female at the scene reported that she, too, witnessed the stabbing.
A criminal complaint filed in the case states the woman was found bleeding from a cut below her lip and told officers Lumbar had stabbed her.
A second male who was at the apartment said he responded to the noise of the altercation and found Lumbar choking his mother, who was then bleeding from her stab wound. The male said he struck Lumbar in the head with his fist to stop the assault.
Court papers also state Lumbar's mother told officers that her son was schizophrenic and had not been taking his medications. She said he had been expressing despair with his own life.
Lumbar has three previous assault convictions in St. Louis County and a Cass County conviction for obstructing the legal process.
