Arvilla Marie Nilson, 87, of Osage died Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home, Menahga.

She was born Dec. 7, 1920, the daughter of Rudolph and Marie (Hoffman) Rabbass on the family farm near Colon, NE. She attended St. Mathew's Parochial School through the eighth grade. When she started school, she could only speak German. She worked doing housecleaning for neighbors to help support the family. Later she worked as a waitress at the Wahoo Café.

She married Carl Nilson Nov. 10, 1940 at St. Mathews Church in Cedar Bluffs, NE. Their first home was a farm near Ceresco, NE. They moved to Minnesota during the spring of 1954. She worked at several cafés in Park Rapids and also as a cook at Osage Elementary School for many years. Later, she managed Park Terrace Restaurant and Travelers Café. Before she retired, she worked in the bakery at Dave and Earl's Red Owl in Park Rapids.

In her later years, she volunteered at the church with mission sewing and other functions. She also volunteered for 4-H and the Carsonville Fathers Day picnic.

Surviving are her husband; children, Germund Carl (Sue) of Afton, Jane (Willie) Niskanen of Milaca, Paul "Steve" (JoLynn) of Osage, Kathy (Earl) Hoefs of Park Rapids, Don (Loretta) of Osage, Carla (Kevin) Haugaard of Forest Lake and Karleen Gehrig of Andover; two sisters, Loretta Hanson and Imoa Suckstorf; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Willmond, and great-grandchild, Angel Staves.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2 at Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Pastor Ken Nyhusmoen will lead the prayer services.

Funeral: 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids with Rev. Kathryn Rothman officiating. Roz Pederson will be the organist. Lynn Just will sing "Take My Hand," Stephanie Nilson will sing "The Lord's Prayer" and Jessica Fredrick will sing "Mother's Covers." Karleen Gehrig will read a poem.

Honorary casket bearers: Connie Henderson, Eva Beck, Oma and Patricia Crabb, Hilde Belter, Erna Kable, Florence Swenson, Darlene Bakke, Donna Lymburner, Marjie Hall, Holley Aas, Leona Bishop, Carmilla Blanchard, Hazel Craft, Hazel Eskola, Mary Harris, Leona Horkey, Kay Joyce, Grace Anne Kind, Vi Mack, Jeanette Miller, Betty Pachel, Lynda Sullivan, Marcella "Sadie" Teach, Vickie Walters, Millie Wilson, Lorraine Wright and Madeline Yliniemi.

Active casket bearers: her grandchildren, Dalton Gehrig, Brandon Guldenaar, Brad Haugaard, Max Hoefs, Blake Lymburner and Bryce and Ryan Nilson.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery in Osage.
