Police search for driver in fatal northwest Minnesota hit-and-run

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Authorities are investigating after a driver fled the scene of a crash that left one man dead Monday night, June 24, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office.

The crash, which authorities said involved a Polaris Ranger side-by-side utility vehicle and a 1999 Mercury Marquis, happened just before 7 p.m. on County Road 158 and Wilkinson Lane in Maple Grove Township, 20 miles north of Detroit Lakes.

The 27-year-old driver of the UTV was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived and was airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, where on Tuesday he died from his injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.

In a Tuesday night news release, Becker County authorities said they were still searching for the driver of the car, who had "fled" after the crash.

Police said they will identify the victim once his family has been notified of his death.
