A 26-year-old man died when the pickup truck he was driving went airborne and struck a tree Saturday, Aug. 3, after hitting another vehicle from behind, north of Park Rapids. The crash was reported at 9:31 p.m.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported a GMC Sierra pickup and a Lexus RX300 were both traveling north on Highway 71, near Hidden Drive in Hubbard County, when the Sierra struck the Lexus from behind at a high rate of speed. The Sierra then went off the road, went airborne and struck a tree.

The driver of the Sierra, Taner Scott Berttunen, 26, Menahga, was killed. The state patrol reported alcohol was involved and Berttunen was not using his seat belt.

The driver of the Lexus – Devlan R. Ingberg, 38, Brainerd – and his 32-year-old passenger, Elisa D. Allie of Detroit Lakes, were not injured and both wore seat belts.

North Memorial Ambulance, Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office and the Park Rapids police and fire departments assisted the state patrol at the scene.
