Five people were transported to the emergency room July 22 after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of County Roads 6 and 15 in Park Rapids.

According to a Park Rapids Police Department incident report, there was a report of an injury accident at approximately 4:04 p.m. Law enforcement found a 2005 Mazda Tribute near the middle of the intersection with severe front-end damage and a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban lying on its passenger side. Witnesses told them the Suburban rolled approximately three times after being struck by the Mazda.

Officers assisted occupants of both vehicles, and medical attention was provided by North Memorial Ambulance personnel.

Occupants of the Mazda were identified as driver Charlie May Black, 19, of Detroit Lakes and passengers Bobbi Sue Black, 17, and Suzanne Patrice Tostenson, 54. The Chevy’s occupants were identified as driver Cynthia Lynn Bedsted, 55, of Hugo and passenger Heidi Celeste Leighton, 39.

According to the incident report, witness Lisa Kristina Rowden said she was stopped at the stop sign facing east on County 15 when she saw the Suburban, traveling south on County 6, struck by the Mazda as it traveled west on County 15.

Rowden told police she did not see the Mazda stop for the stop sign. The crash report cites Charlie Black’s “failure to yield right-of-way” as a contributing factor in the accident.

All occupants were using lap and shoulder belts and were transported to CHI St. Joseph’s Health with suspected minor injuries. Bedsted was temporarily trapped in the wreck, but was freed by non-mechanical means.

Both vehicles were totaled and were towed from the scene.
