3 suspended at Fargo YMCA after 4-year-old left out in cold

FARGO – The YMCA of Cass and Clay suspended three day care providers in Fargo after they brought a 4-year-old boy outside Monday with no coat or winter gear.

The boy at the south Fargo location, 4243 19th Ave. S., didn’t want to dress to go outside, said Paul Finstad, YMCA president.

The teacher hoped the boy would change his mind if they brought him out into the cold, along with the child’s boots and coat.

Finstad said that doesn’t follow YMCA policy, and the nonprofit has suspended all three staffers involved.

“There certainly has been concern expressed by some parents and we want to assure, you know, that this isn’t how we operate. We’ve been in the child care business for 20 years,” he said.

YMCA officials weren’t sure how long the suspensions will last.

Temperatures were in the 20s and low 30s during the morning and afternoon on Monday.
