Hubbard County Auditor/Treasurer Pam Heeren was surprised to receive a statewide award Wednesday evening and even more surprised at her impromptu party hosted via Skype.

Heeren, who began in the office in 1973, was given the honor by the Minnesota Association of County Officers at a Twin Cities annual meeting she was attending.

Her family showed up to surprise her as she received the award, Minnesota Auditor of the Year.

From a podium in which the diminutive Heeren could barely be seen, she looked into a computer camera and noticed a dozen Hubbard County employees were beaming their approval and applauding via the Internet.

"You guys are here!" she exclaimed. "Did you know about this?"

County Attorney Don Dearstyne joked it's the "first time he's ever seen Heeren speechless."

Most of her employees attended the gathering, with three county board members and others.

Heeren, holding back tears, introduced her family and thanked them, her co-workers and members of MACO for the recognition.

Skype is a live chat program, so the Hubbard County guests felt like they attended the presentation.
