Nevis celebrates new park playground

To celebrate Halvorson Beach's new playground, a ribbon-cutting ceremony -- complete with cake, music and happy kids -- was held Sunday in conjunction with the Park Rapids Water Ski Team show. A sunny, summer evening greeted those who attended Sunday's grand opening of the Halvorson Beach playground.

Nevis Boy Scouts handed out balloons.

The Nevis Lions served up hot dog dinners.

Council member Sue Gray offered complimentary slices of cake.

Mayor Jarod Senger thanked "all who donated their time and talent to this new park."

The project received $40,620 in donations from individuals and organizations, ranging from $50 to $5,000. Hubbard County provided another $28,405. Four major donors to the project were the Mark Hewitt Family Foundation, the Nevis Fire Relief Association, Offutt Family Foundation and an anonymous donation in memory of David L. Cass.

A new, seven-foot wide Halvorson Beach sign thanks park contributors.

"It's only every so often we get to have a playground like this dedicated to the city, from the city," Senger said. "It's fun to see all the kids on the equipment today."

He singled out Gray for her contribution to the project. "She headed up our parks committee — hours and hours and hundreds of phone calls and a real passion for the betterment of the conditions down here for the kids. This would not have not happened without Sue and her tireless efforts," he said.

"Don't worry," Gray told the crowd. "We're going to still keep fundraising because we've still got Muskie Park to do."
