Gas pump explodes at Detroit Lakes station

A gas pump explosion at the Detroit Lakes Cenex had emergency crews scrambling early Monday evening. Just before 5 p.m. the Detroit Lakes Fire Department responded to the explosion and fire at the gas station, located on County Highway 34 on the east side of town and only one block from the elementary and middle school. Authorities say nobody was hurt, and everyone was evacuated from the premises. Bystanders reported hearing the commotion.

“There were three (explosions). I counted,” Daniel Keck, a Cenex employee said.

Keck said everyone started running, and she acted fast, telling everyone to shut down the fryers, which she said is standard protocol in that situation.

At the time of the explosion, Zayic Concrete, Inc. was cutting away concrete near the pump that caught fire. The owner of the vehicle that was pumping gas at the time was also near the pump.

While the firefighters worked to put out the fire that included a car next to the pump, law enforcement kept everyone at a safe distance, blocking off the surrounding streets and deferring Highway 34 traffic onto the M-State frontage road.

The fire department had extinguished the fire by 5:20 p.m.

According to Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Scott Flynn, the cause of the fire was still undetermined as of 8 p.m. Monday night.
