Midnight fire keeps crews scrambling

BY Sarah smith

A grass fire late Monday night tested the mettle of three fire departments.

Park Rapids, Carsonville and the DNR fought a blaze on 120th Street and 165th Avenue around midnight.

Park Rapids Fire Chief Donn Hoffman said the fire “was very hard to get to” in a wooded area.

“Our UTV got us to part of it,” Hoffman said. “We ended up using a Cat (Caterpillar) and bombardier from the DNR.”

Because of recent rains, DNR firefighters and their equipment are not on call anymore, Hoffman said, making manpower and equipment a bit trickier to assemble.
