Three fire departments contain blaze between Itasca and Park Rapids

The DNR called in a chopper to help. Firefighters were using water and foam to quell the flames off Highway 71 and County Road 41 Saturday morning.

     Three fire departments rushed south of Itasca State Park Saturday morning to control a grass fire that broke out west of State Highway 71 north of Park Rapids.

     Park Rapids Fire, the DNR and Lake George firefighters brought in the heavy artillery, containing the fore in an hour.

     At least five engines, several grass rigs and backpacks were used.

     The fire off County Road 42 slowed traffic on the busy highway and Hubbard County deputy Jarod Anderson was performing traffic control at the site.

     The fire was reported shortly after 11 a.m. By 12:30 a.m., firefighters were “mopping up” and containing odd hot spots.
