Appetizers are good to have on hand next weekend. Whether it is having something for the kids to munch on while waiting for Thanksgiving dinner, for adults while watching sports or to serve with sides of Thanksgiving leftovers, here are some recipes from the Gooseberry Patch “5 Ingredients or Less” cookbook to sample.

Sausage Balls

1 pound ground sausage

2 cups biscuit baking mix

12-ounce package shredded cheddar cheese

Combine ingredients together and shape into 1-inch balls. Arrange on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen.

Chili Cheese Dip

8-ounce package cream cheese, softened

10-1/2 can chili without beans

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Spread cream cheese in the bottom of an ungreased 13-by-9-inch baking pan. Spread chili on top and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with crispy tortilla chips. Serves 10.

Chipped Beef Spread

2-1/2 ounce package of dried, chipped beef, chopped

8-ounce package of cream cheese, softened

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

2 scallions, chopped

Mix ingredients together in a serving dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Serve with crackers.

Sweet Onion Spread

2 sweet onions, minced

1-1/2 cups shredded Parmesan cheese, divided

1 cup mayonnaise

1 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon dill weed, divided

Blend onions, one cup Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream and 2-1/2 teaspoons dill weed together until well blended. Spoon mixture into two ungreased 9-inch glass pie pans. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and dill weed and bake at 325 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden. Serve warm.

Meat and Cheese Roll Ups

1 pound thinly sliced deli meat

1 pound thinly sliced Swiss cheese

1/2 cup butter, melted

1 cup bread crumbs

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Roll up one meat slice and one cheese slice together and secure with a toothpick. Dip in butter, bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. Arrange on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. Makes about 24.

Pepperoni Bread

1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed

4-ounce package sliced pepperoni

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Roll out thawed bread dough into a 15-by-10-inch rectangle and arrange pepperoni slices on top. Roll up lengthwise and secure closed with toothpicks. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Slice to serve with warm pizza sauce on the side for dipping. Makes 12 servings.

Reuben Bread Bowl Dip

2 round loaves rye bread

8-ounce package cream cheese, softened

4-ounce package shredded mozzarella cheese

Two 2-1/2-ounce packages dried, chipped beef, diced

Hollow out the center of one loaf of bread and set aside. Cube removed and remaining loaf of bread and set aside. Mix cream cheese and mozzarella cheese together and fold in chipped beef. Spoon into bread center and bake at 350 degrees for 1-1/4 hours. Serve warm surrounded with bread cubes. Serves 8-10.
