The Northern Light Opera Company will present Carlo Menotti’s made- for-television Christmas opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors” Dec. 12, 13, and 14 at Armory Square in Park Rapids.
After a 10-year intermission, “Amahl and the Night Visitors” will again be presented as a holiday event for the community.
The opera tells of Amahl, a poor handicapped shepherd boy who lives with his widowed mother.
The Three Kings, who have been following a very bright star, arrive at their house and ask to rest for the night.
Because she is very poor, the mother has to go to her neighbors to ask for food to feed the kings.
Neighboring shepherds arrive with food and entertain the kings. A miracle happens!
John Holler, a former member of the Tucson Boy Choir now living in Park Rapids, will sing the role of Amahl.
Other roles include the mother (Gail Ahart), the kings (Tom Ellingson, Glenn Anderson and Tim Ellingson), the page (Mark Bridge) and the shepherd dancers (Katie Jager, Jake Jager, Coral Johnson, and Lewis Johnson).
Rehearsal accompanist is Sarah Kaufenberg.
The chorus of shepherds has been rehearsing; however, more singers of all ages would be welcome. If interested, contact Paul Dove at pd5@evansville.edu .
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Region 2 Arts council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
