WASHINGTON D.C. - A Fargo news anchor auditioned Saturday for a national singing reality TV show.
Though she wasn’t picked for “The Voice,” Stephanie Goetz of Valley News Live said she’s glad she traveled to the nation’s capital for a shot at the reality series.
“I said, ‘You know what? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,’” she said. Goetz has been singing since childhood. Her mother toured in a Christian singing band for a few years after finishing college.
“Singing is in my blood,” Goetz said.

Saturday, Goetz lined up with other hopeful singers at a Washington, D.C., convention center.
The others in line impressed Goetz, she said. One person would break out into song and others would quickly follow.
“Every single one of them should be a recording artist,” she said.
Goetz chose to audition with “At Last,” a song made famous by Etta James and frequently performed at weddings.
Goetz called James her idol and said she most identifies with soul music.
Her experience anchoring newscasts made the audition process run smoother, she said.
Goetz said another woman who auditioned later told her she didn’t seem nervous.
“This is kind of second nature to me,” Goetz said.

Both anchoring and singing require poise and emotion, she said.
Goetz recently sang at the 17th annual Celebration of Women and their Music event in downtown Fargo. She said she plans to sing in the Fargo-Moorhead area more often.
As for any future attempts at national singing contests, she said she has no plans for another audition but wouldn’t say no to trying again.
“I checked it off the bucket list,” Goetz said. “And we’ll see what happens.”
