The Friends of the Park Rapids Area Library are sponsoring the 2017 Young Adult Writing Contest at the Park Rapids Library between Jan. 23 and Feb. 28.
In a new twist, budding writers should submit a story based on a visual prompt. The selected photo - complete with a foggy, abandoned street and brooding lone tree v is set to inspire all manner of tales.
Students in Park Rapids, Nevis, Menahga, Sebeka and Laporte as well as homeschooled students in the area are invited to submit a short story, maximum 500 words in length, using the visual prompt.
Contest entries are divided into three categories: sixth-seventh grade, eighth-ninth grade and 10th through 12th grade.
A prize of $30 in Park Rapids Chamber Bucks will be awarded to the first place entry in each category. Second place will be awarded $20 in Chamber Bucks, and a third place entries receives $5 in Chamber Bucks.
Every student entering the contest will be given $2 in Book Sale Bucks from Friends of the Library to be used like cash to purchase books at the Friends of the Library Book Sales.

In addition, the stories winning first place will be published in the Park Rapids Enterprise and Northwoods Press.
Double spaced, typed entries can be brought to the Park Rapids Library or emailed as a PDF document to willenbringl@krls.org . Include your name, grade, and phone number on a cover sheet. The deadline is Feb. 28
