Kindergartners share Thanksgiving turkey recipes

Century Elementary School kindergarten teacher Rebecca Penning said her students “really got into the turkey recipes this year. They’re pretty adorable. I don’t ever tell them how to make the turkey, but I do ask them a lot of questions during the days that lead up to the recipe writing. I must have said something about ketchup this year because that ingredient really stands out.”

  • Tenley Anderson: “Go to Walmart and you find a turkey in a can. Then you cook it for 10 minutes. Then you add salt and pepper and then you put a little seasoning to it. Your oven has to be a temperature of like medium.”
  • Bentley Anstine: “Go to Coborn’s and try to pick a turkey – try to pick a different one from last year! Use hot water to warm it up until the ice melts. Some people have a fire and roast it on two sticks over the fire. You could put hot pepper, salt and pepper and ketchup on it, like you do on chicken. Or you could dip it in hot sauce. The temperature should be 40 degrees, maybe.”
  • Gwendolyn Berg: “Buy a turkey at Walmart and cook it. Put it in a big bowl and put it in the stove. Cook it! Put it in for ten minutes at 10 degrees.”
  • Briella Boyd: “Buy your turkey at Main Street Meats because there is meat there. Pick the smallest one because it’s cheaper. Unwrap the wrappers and put it on a plate and put it in the oven. Cook it for four minutes. After it’s done cooking, put on some seasoning like chicken flavors. Put it on a plate and give it to your family!”
  • Emelia Butler: “My mom can go to Walmart and buy a big turkey. Cut the turkey in half and put on hot sauce for my sister and ketchup on my part. Turn the oven to 150 degrees and cook it for four hours. Then it’s done, so get your silverware and a plate and share it with the family.”
  • Hudson Caron: “I think you should go to Main Street Meats because there is a lot of meat there. Buy the turkey named Tom, well I don’t think there is actually a turkey Tom. I don’t know its name, but buy it and cook it for 17 minutes. It should be 30 hot. Grandpa usually cooks it for me.”
  • Oliver Carter: “Buy a turkey at Walmart. Put ketchup on then put it in the oven for 1,500 degrees. Add seasoning like pepper. Cook it for 5,000 – well, actually, it could be five minutes, and it’s done.”
  • Trent Henry: “Go to Walmart and have your Grandpa buy a turkey. You could grill it and roast it over a fire. Put on a little bit of pepper. Cook it for 30 minutes. Let it cool down and then cut it and eat it.”
  • Henry Jenson: “You could go to the store where a lot of turkeys are and buy the goodest one they have. You’ll know it’s the goodest because it will have a tag on it that tells you if it’s good or not. You could slip it on a big pan and put it on some kind of machine that will make it hot for two days. Then once it’s done you can put pepper on it. That’s about all I have to tell you.”
  • Esther Johanning: “You could buy it at Hugo’s or Walmart. You could put it in the oven to get like the frozen part off, and then put it on the grill to bake. I never check how hot it gets, but I think it would go to like 50 degrees. You could put pepper on it.”
  • Ava Leacox: “Go shopping at Hugo’s and buy a turkey. You should get one that’s not too cold. Sometimes my dad puts pepper and salt on. He usually puts it in a big pan. The time to put it in the oven is maybe 99 minutes and it steams. The oven should be 88 degrees. We usually eat it with pie. My favorite is pumpkin pie with whipped cream and Cool Whip.”
  • Knox LeGrand: “Have your mom go hunting for a turkey in the woods. When you get the turkey, you gotta take off the feathers and then you gotta cook it for 20 hours or 40 hours. Get it warm, like 50 degrees or 90 degrees. Let’s put pepper on it and hot spice and sweet stuff like brown and white sugar. You could eat the turkey with salad.”
  • John Lux Gomez: “Go to Walmart and look at the turkey. Buy the one with the little tail and wings, and two tiny legs. It doesn’t have a head any more. You just have to lay it on the table and cut it. Don’t let it fall on the floor or it will get sand on it! You just have to make sure it gets caliente, almost burnt, but not burnt. You have to put the oven on a one and a four. Ask your mom to do it and then you will be safe. Then you have to wait, like you are counting, for 9 or 11 hours and it will be done.”
  • Milly Warmbold: “Coborn’s has good turkeys there, but my family hunts for a turkey. My mom and dad and Jade cut off the feathers. You have to put on some salt and some pepper and we put on some powder and flour. Then you do the stuffing in the turkey. Put the oven on 11 degrees and leave it for 9 minutes.” 
  • Wyatt Wilson: “Walmart has turkeys. Buy a big one. Put it in the oven for five minutes at 200 degrees. I like white sauce on my turkey.”
  • Violet Hendrickson: We always buy our turkey at the healthy grocery store, the one with the picture of the three foods on top. Coborn’s. Pick a big turkey and put it in the oven. 27 degrees is how hot it should be. You can eat the turkey plain after you leave it in the oven for 20 minutes.
