Adam McCauley, an artist based in northern Minnesota, will be featured in the Nemeth Art Center's community gallery this month.
An opening reception is Friday, Aug. 5 from 4:30-7 p.m.
Originally from Superior, Wis., McCauley has lived in Duluth for a long time and considers it home.
"I have found that while I am not inspired by the lake or Duluth's natural beauty, I find inspiration from the seasons and the weather," he said.
His work, while abstract in nature, explores the process and physicality that paint can have. Built with layers, McCauley says his work is focused on the formal qualities inherent to the medium of painting. He employs traditional and non-traditional painting materials to make abstract paintings that are "purposefully based in our physical world."
"I want my paintings to be complex in their surface quality and mark-making," McCauley said. "I want the paintings to be a complete thought and thoroughly worked out. I paint abstractly and I always have, so in a sense, I am developing a language that is my own created in paint. So I really want people to get a glimpse into this language and world I am creating and an exhibit is the best way to achieve this. This exhibit will have all new work and includes both paintings and collages."
He has received a Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Fellowship Grant.
McCauley's art will be at the Nemeth Art Center through Aug. 26.
Admission is free to the galleries, which are open Thursday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through September.
The Nemeth Art Center is located in the upper level of the historic county courthouse, located at 301 Court Ave. For more information upcoming exhibits and membership privileges, visit www.nemethartcenter.org or call 218-616-2064.
