Girls Basketball: Menahga wins tournament title

The Braves defeated Ogilvie and Legacy Christian Academy at Andover.

The Menahga girls basketball team closed out 2021 by winning the title at the Legacy Christian Academy tournament at Andover on Dec. 29-30.

Three players scored in double figures in leading the Braves to a 54-39 victory over Ogilvie in the semifinals on Dec. 29 while a stellar defensive performance sparked Menahga to a 43-28 win over Legacy Christian Academy in the championship game on Dec. 30.

Menahga improved to 7-1 with the two wins.

Braves defeat Ogilvie

A 17-6 run in the first half broke open a close game as the Braves defeated Ogilvie and advanced to the title game.

Janie Tormanen opened the game with four straight layups, Mackenzie Anderson had a layup and hit a 3-pointer, and Erica Tormanen hit a jumper as Menahga held a 15-10 lead. The Braves led 15-13 before going on a 17-6 run to claim a 32-19 lead before the break. Lela Peterson hit two jumpers and scored on a pair of layups, Janie Tormanen had a pair of inside baskets, and Anderson connected on a 3-pointer as the Braves took control. Menahga led 32-21 at the half.

Layups by Janie Tormanen, Anderson and Janelle Hendrickson pushed the lead to 38-21 before layups by Erica Tormanen, Peterson and Janie Tormanen and a basket off a rebound by Allie Pfeifer made it 46-28. Layups by Joie Koll, Peterson and Niina Pinoniemi sealed the win.

Janie Tormanen (16), Peterson (14) and Anderson (10) scored in double figures to lead the Braves. Hendrickson hauled down eight rebounds while Pfeifer and Janie Tormanen had six rebounds each. Peterson led the way with seven steals and six assists as Menahga prevailed despite going 1 for 20 on 3-pointers.

Kadence Pierce’s 12 points and 15 rebounds led the Lions, who went 2 for 16 on 3-pointers and turned the ball over 22 times in falling to 5-1 on the season.

Defense keys win

After facing a 24-21 deficit, the Braves went on a 22-2 run to defeat the host team and capture the title.

Anderson hit three straight 3-pointers to start the game-winning run. Janie Tormanen scored on a pair of layups, Peterson hit a 3-pointer, Anderson scored on a layup and Erica Tormanen turned a steal into a layup as Menahga led 43-26.

Three-pointers by Hendrickson and Erica Tormanen, three inside baskets by Pfeifer, a jumper by Peterson, and layups by Erica Tormanen and Anderson gave the Braves a 20-17 advantage at the break.

Anderson’s 13 points, Pfeifer’s seven rebounds, Peterson’s four assists and Erica Tormanen’s four steals led the Braves, who made 6 of 19 3-pointers.

Miranda Demars scored 10 points for the Lions, who made 5 of 17 3-pointers and turned the ball over 27 times in falling to 4-3.
