Gladen Construction Inc. of Laporte was awarded the bid to construct a tunnel under U.S. Hwy. 71.
Kent Skaar, senior project manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Parks and Trails Division, recently told the citizens-led committee that the DNR intends to get bids for the trail tunnel, but due to shipping delays, construction may be pushed to spring 2023.
The proposed route of the Itasca-Heartland Connection Trail passes through this parcel, located northwest of Emmaville in Clay Township.
Bids are set to go out for tunnel construction under U.S. Hwy. 71. This is part of phase 1 of the Itasca-Heartland Connection Trail, a multi-purpose, paved trail between Itasca State Park and the Heartland Trail.
WSB is under contract to design the tunnel and administer construction.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, tunnel construction design will begin this year, with construction in 2022.

The first phase of the project will build a trail from the Itasca State Park contact station, a tunnel under U.S. Hwy 71 and a 2-mile trail that connects with an existing snowmobile trail.
A $3.8 million state bonding request for Itasca-Heartland Connection Trail is uncertain.
Following a closed session Tuesday morning, the Hubbard County Board approved a draft purchase agreement for a five-acre parcel for sale at the intersection of the Heartland Trail and CSAH 4.
