The Park Rapids High School drama department captured first with their performance of "Prometheus" at the Minnesota State High School League 24A Subsection One-Act Play Competition, held Jan. 25 in the auditorium.
“Prometheus,” is an award-winning play by Linda Barnes. The question of heroes in a modern world is examined in both comic and serious scenes, all centering around the superhuman figure of Prometheus, giver of fire.
Laporte won second place, performing "Our Place." Written by Terry Gabbard, the unassuming location of a dock extending out onto a small lake serves as the backdrop for five different stories.
Laporte drama director Shannon Lemcke believes the last time Laporte won at subsections was in 2016. “This will be my first time directing, and most of this cast’s first time performing at section competition,” she said. “We are very excited!”
Six high schools competed on Saturday – Frazee, Laporte, Menahga, Nevis, Park Rapids and Pillager.
Park Rapids and Laporte advance to the Section 6A contest, which will be held in Hawley, Minn. on Saturday, Feb. 1. Eight plays will be performed, beginning at 10 a.m. This event is free to the public.
