On Friday, July 12, the Lakes Area Music Festival (LAMF) of Brainerd will bring a performance to Park Rapids as a part of a statewide tour comprising its Prelude Series. Featuring the Altius Quartet (Boulder, Colo.), this laid-back program will include a variety of styles of music, with casual discussion between works, making it a delight for classical music enthusiasts and rookies alike. The 7:30 p.m. concert at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids is open to the public; no tickets required. To celebrate the 11th season, the Lakes Area Music Festival created a String Quartet Fellowship. From an international pool of applicant ensembles, the Altius Quartet was selected as the inaugural ensemble. They will spend this summer in Minnesota engaged in an intensive rehearsal retreat, statewide performance tour and numerous outreach activities on behalf of LAMF. Deriving their name from the Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger"), Altius Quartet strives to communicate art to a more diverse audience through community engagement and innovative repertoire. Hailed as “rich” and “captivating” by the renowned music blog “I Care If You Listen,” the Altius Quartet is garnering an international reputation and enrapturing the hearts of audiences through their charisma and dynamism. Altius has also received critical praise for their musicianship and versatility on both of their albums: “Dress Code” and “Shostakovich StringQuartets 7, 8, & 9.”Altius has also been awarded prizes at many internationally respected competitions including: the Schoenfeld International String Competition, the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Coltman Chamber Music Competition, and the Plowman Chamber Music Competition. The quartet has an active performance schedule including engagements at music festivals, series, and universities throughout the United States.Formed in 2011 at Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts, Altius is currently based in the Denver/Boulder metroplex where they held the position of Fellowship String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Colorado-Boulder. During their tenure at CU-Boulder, they were mentored by the world renowned Takács Quartet. The Altius Quartet maintains an active performance schedule with engagements at music festivals, series, and universities throughout the United States including: Carnegie Hall, Chamber Music Cincinnati, the Aspen Music Festival, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and the Fayetteville Chamber Music Festival.In addition to this concert in Park Rapids, July concert locations will also include Aitkin, Bemidji, Brainerd, Crosslake, Deerwood, Minneapolis, Motley, and Nisswa.
