The Park Rapids Area Library has always been a great place to get books and a great place to meet friends for fun. This summer, we are combining both into the AdventureTweens Book Club for ages 8-13. We will be reading three books that really sum up this summer's theme: "Reading takes you everywhere!" Sign up at the beginning of the month, read the book, then join us the next month for chatting and fun.

We'll start reading in May with "Inkheart" by Cornelia Funke, a book full of the magic of reading. Mortimer Folchart, or Mo, has a special talent that he has kept secret from his daughter, Meggie. If he reads a book aloud, characters come out of the book as living, breathing people. Think of the fun of having your favorite fictional characters come to life! But think of the danger - for every thing called out of a book, something or someone enters the book. That's how Meggie's mother became trapped inside the book "Inkheart" when Meggie was only three. It's also how the villain Capricorn was freed to wreak havoc in our world. Mo must find a copy of the book and read her out again, but the evil Capricorn is buying up all existing copies so he can force Mo to use his talent for Capricorn's benefit. Now Capricorn is after them and Meggie wonders if she also has the gift. Is she in danger of becoming Capricorn's pawn or is she the one to send him back into the pages where he belongs? Sign up May 1-10 to get your copy and then join our book chat from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16. Afterwards, we'll watch the 2008 movie (rate PG) starring Brendan Fraser, Eliza Bennett, Helen Mirren, and Paul Bettany until 4 p.m.

Sometimes things aren't always what they seem. Our second book, "Masterminds" by Gordon Korman, is set in Serenity, a small town where everyone knows each other, where everything runs smoothly, and where all the kids think they're regular kids. Or are they? When Eli becomes ill as soon as he leaves the city limits, he discovers maybe that's not altogether true. Maybe he and some of the other kids are special. As doubts arise, the mystery unfolds. How deep can deception go?

If you like solving a good puzzle, you'll love this book! Sign up June 1-10 to read this fast-paced thriller and join our book chat from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6.

'When You Reach Me'

We'll wrap up the summer with Rebecca Stead's "When You Reach Me."

Set in 1979 Manhattan, sixth-grader Miranda and her friends know how to get around their city neighborhood. But changes are happening. Her best friend since childhood, Sal, has stopped talking to her, her mom is going to be on the $20,000 Pyramid TV show, and Miranda is discovering mysterious notes in her apartment by someone who knows WAY too much about her and her single mom. Who is leaving them? And what about that new guy on the corner who sleeps with his head under the postbox and kicks in the air? What's that about?

When the latest note says, "I am coming to save your friend's life, and my own," Miranda knows it's serious but she's not quite sure what to do. The startling end events will have readers circling back to read it all over again. This is a great book for anyone who loves "A Wrinkle in Time" as much as Miranda does!

We'll make sense of it all from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, August 3 during our book chat.
