Library youth writing contest underway


A short-story writing contest for young adults is underway at the Park Rapids Area Library.

The 12th Annual Young Adult Writing Contest started Monday, Jan. 15 and is open to Park Rapids, Nevis, Menahga, Sebeka, Laporte and homeschool students in grades 6 to 12.

Students may bring their short story, 500 words or less, typed double-spaced to the library, or email it as an attached PDF to Each story should include and complete the phrase "Reading takes you..." Deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Prizes will be awarded in each of three age groups: Grade 6, Grades 7 to 8, and Grades 9 to 12. First-, second-, and third-place winners in each category will receive $30, $20, or $5 in "chamber bucks" to spend like cash at businesses that belong to the Park Rapids Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, each entrant will receive $2 in Friends of the Library Book Bucks to spend at any future book sale at the library. The best story in each category will also be published in the newspaper.

The contest is sponsored by Friends of the Park Rapids Area Library.
