The Park Rapids Area Library will be participating in “Once Upon A Reader,” a statewide one-book program sponsored by the Council of Regional Public Library System Administrators and funded from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Public libraries across the state will be offering activities and events featuring the book, “MOO!,” written by David LaRochelle, and illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka. Activities will include a special “Milk and Cookies” story time, an outdoor story walk (weatherproof pages of the story will be displayed on large yard signs and spaced along a path or in a park or playground), and a drive-in “MOO!”-vie (a family movie night children can attend in a “car” they design out of a cardboard box). The finale will be a visit and show by the author and illustrator for families and groups with preschool children (ages 0-6). “Since we hope to provide a book for each preschool child, it’s important that we have an idea of how many children are likely to participate in one of the “Milk and Cookies” story times,” said librarian Jodi Schultz. Parents, child care providers, preschool teachers and others who work directly or indirectly with area preschool children and their families are encouraged “to help spread the word” and enroll for the program at the library. Every Minnesota child enrolled in the Head Start program will already be receiving a book, noted Schultz. If interested in bringing children or groups, stop by the Park Rapids Area Library to register or send an email to parkrapids@krls.org by Friday, December 19 indicating your name, phone number, the number of children. “We can’t wait to get this adventure MOO!-ving,” says Schultz.
