An informational "Passport Day" will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Hubbard County License Bureau, located on the first floor of the courthouse.
Bureau personnel will provide passport information to U.S. citizens and accept passport applications.
Photos can be taken on site (at a cost of $10) and birth certificates for those born in Minnesota will be available. A certified birth certificate and photo identification are required to apply for a passport.
U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when re-entering the U.S. by air or sea. Citizens re-entering from Canada or Mexico by vehicle at land borders must present a passport card.

Cost for a passport book is $100 and valid for 10 years. Cost is $85 for those 15 and under and valid for five years. Both parents must be with children 16 and under when making the application.
Cost for a passport card is $45 for adults and $35 for children 15 and under.

"Power Up in 2010" wellness challenge participants are invited to a final gathering Tuesday, March 30 at the Park Rapids Century School.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments, many door prizes and body composition testing from the Center for Weight Management in Park Rapids.
The event will start at 7 p.m. with individuals given an opportunity to comment on how the challenge has made a difference in their lives, thank yous and the grand prize drawings (you do not have to be present to be eligible for a grand prize).

Auditions for the Long Lake Theater production of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 30 at the theater located in Hubbard.
This musical celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum know as "the relationship."
Act one explores the journey from dating and waiting to love and marriage, while act two reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set.
This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, to those who have dared to ask, "Say, what are you doing Saturday night?"

Laporte's annual Easter egg hunt will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3 in the Laporte School commons area.

Audrey Thayer, an enrolled member of the White Earth Reservation, will present a program on social justice issues at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 6 in the basement meeting room of the courthouse.
Thayer has been focused on social justice issues throughout her life. She began her commitments at age 18 organizing for women's rights. By 24, Thayer was organizing, educating and working in the areas of domestic violence, racial justice and anti-war/peace issues.
Thayer has an associate degree in social work and secretarial science, a bachelor of arts from the University Minnesota-Minneapolis in Native American studies and a master's degree in education from Cambridge College in Massachusetts.
Her work experience in the last 40 years has been in tribal, non-profit, private business and with local, state and federal agencies.
The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Park Rapids.

Auditions for the Northern Light Opera Company's production of the acclaimed musical, "Godspell," will be held in Walker at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 8 at Hope Lutheran Church and in Park Rapids at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 9 and 10 a.m. Saturday, April 10 at Calvary Lutheran Church.
Singers should come prepared to sing a song with accompaniment (pianist will be provided). Call back auditions for specific roles will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 10 at Calvary.

As a final stop on its 2010 spring concert tour, the Bemidji Choir and Chamber Singers will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 9 at St. Johns Lutheran Church.
The Bemidji Choir, founded in 1937 by Carl O. Thompson, has gained an international reputation for excellence.
Under the direction of his successor, Dr. Paul Brandvik, the choir represented the United States five times at the international choral festival, The Europa Cantat, in France, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain. They have appeared in the Israel Festival and at the Zimriya, World Festival of Choirs in Israel.
Nick Dahn, one of the singers in the Bemidji Choir and Chamber Singers, will once again be heard in his hometown of Park Rapids. The Park Rapids Classic Chorale is actively promoting this concert as another opportunity for the community to hear high quality choral music.
The concert is free to the public, however, there will be a freewill offering taken to help defray tour costs.

Central Lakes College Law Enforcement will hold a class for individuals applying for the civilian handgun permit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 10.
The class meets at the Business and Industry Center of the Brainerd campus and will also use an off-campus firing range.
This course meets state certification standards on "carry and conceal." Participants must show experience with handguns through a previous handgun permit, completion of an NRA course, DNR course, law enforcement courses or experience, or military experience.
The course will consist of 3.5 hours of classroom information and 4.5 hours on firearm certification at a shooting range. The lab will consist of 100 rounds of practice. Only unaltered firearms in original configuration can be used for the certification process.
Participants must supply their firearm, 100 rounds of ammunition, a holster, hat/cap, ear protection, safety glasses, and rain gear.
Fee is $85, including a book. Instructor is Skip Rudquist.
