A workshop on medications and affordability for seniors will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Park Rapids Area Library.
Coborns' pharmacist Bryan Ridgley, will discuss medications. Carol Bye of the Senior LinkAge Line and Camille Hurtado of Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota will discuss programs that help seniors pay for medications.

The Mantrap Valley Conservation Club will host a burger and corn dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 at the clubhouse located 1.5 miles east of Emmaville on CSAH 24.

A free presentation on "Art and the Spirit World" will begin at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 at Jack Pine Cafe.
Bob Mansfield, tenured professor from San Diego State University, will present a program that will reveal how the ancient indigenous peoples of the North American continent used art as a vehicle to connect to the spirit world.
He will show the importance of the Shaman as the spiritual leader and artist. He will examine the cultures of the Inuit, Maya, Native American tribes and places like the Yucatan, Chaco Canyon, Serpent Mound, Poverty Point, Bear Butte and Sierra San Francisco.
He will also examine the nomadic designs of the Native Americans such as tepees, papooses and canoes and show how remarkably sophisticated they were.
The 45-minute presentation will be illustrated with digital images he has collected and taken over the last 40 years.

This is part of the annual August free lecture series at Blank Canvas Gallery.
Mansfield was here last year to share his experiences as a sculptor working internationally with projects in China and in the United States.
Social time will start at 5:30 p.m.; the lecture is from 6:15 to 7 p.m.
The Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers 36th annual show will be held Aug. 19-21 on the north side of Itasca State Park.
The show features a 1939 Massey-Harris serial one prototype combine. The J. Neils/Red Lake bandsaw mill is nearing completion.

A North Country Trail day hike will be in the Lake George area and span 8.7 miles Saturday, Aug. 20.
Hikers should meet at 9 a.m. at the trailhead, located at the intersection of CSAH 4 and Halverson Trail, 2.5 miles south of Lake George.
This hike proceeds west from the trailhead to Spider Lake Forest Road, just east of Itasca State Park. The trail crosses the historic Schoolcraft River and features a magnificent balsam forest.

Sunday, Aug. 21
The Fishhook Challenge half marathon and 5K run will be held Sunday, Aug. 21, with an out and back loop that starts and finishes in Heartland Park.
Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. The marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

The half marathon is a scenic run around Fish Hook Lake (clockwise). The middle miles have rolling hills. At mile 12, runners are back on the Heartland Trail for a flat and fast finish into the park.
There will be four aid stations available at mile 4, 10km, 9, and 11 with sports drinks and water.
The 5K route is fairly flat and fast. It starts by the tennis courts in the middle of Heartland Park. There will be one aid station at the turn-around point with sports drinks and water.
The half marathon and 5K courses are USATF certified with accurate miles marked.
Both races finish at Heartland Park. Awards are given in 10-year age groups, as well as the overall male and female.
Runners can take the "dual challenge," run the half marathon and make it back in time to participate in the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

Wayne Hankel will be teaching a three-day wood carving class Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 22-24 at the Blank Canvas Gallery and Education Center, located at 311 Main Ave. S. in Park Rapids.
Class time will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
The class projects will utilize carving cut-outs that are pre-cut by the instructor.
Hankel has conducted classes in wood carving for over 20 years. His primary interest centers on realistic wildlife carving but he also does chip carving and relief carving.
Participants will learn proper wood carving techniques and should be able to carve two or three realistic wildlife carvings during the three-day class.

Individuals who will be 12 years old in 2011 are invited to enroll in the Minnesota firearm safety course to be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Environmental Education building at the fairgrounds.
Registration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 at the Environmental Education building at which time the books will be handed out and fees collected.
There is no maximum age limit for participants taking the course. Each student will be required to bring a self-addressed, stamped, letter size envelope at the time of registration.

A Shoreland Expo will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 in the Faith Baptist Church fellowship room, located on Highway 71 South, Park Rapids.
Registration and classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A bus tour will take participants to three shoreline restoration projects; pre-registration is required by calling Hubbard County Extension at 732-3391.
The expo will provide information about rain gardens and the benefits of rain barrels, protecting and enhancing water quality, shoreland integrity, valued property and plants, fish and other wildlife diversity.
Speakers include Kelly Condiff, Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District; Steve Hall, Shoreline Creations; Shane Foley, Hubbard County SWCD and Cassie Novak, Minnesota Master Naturalist.

St. Joseph's Area Health Services is offering an "I'm going to be a big brother/ sister" class for siblings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 in the hospital's lower level conference room.
The class is offered at no charge.
Kids are invited to bring Mom and Dad for a party atmosphere that includes a "silly siblings" video (geared for ages 2 to 6). Kids will receive instruction with a doll on how to hold a baby and be a hands-on helper.

The North Central Gobblers of Akeley and the Tall Pine Toms of Park Rapids will hold a first ever Jakes Day event Saturday, Aug. 27 at Camp Wilderness.
Kids ages 9 to 17 are invited to attend with their parents. Participants will receive instructions in shooting archery equipment, as well as muzzleloaders, rifles, and shotguns. Participants also will learn to identify animals and recognize safe shots, and learn strategies for hunting deer and turkeys.
Registration runs from 8 to 9 a.m., with the field portion of the day beginning at 9. Lunch, sponsored by the Park Rapids chapter, is at noon and door prizes will be presented during the meal.

Ekphrastic Poetry is poetry written about or in response to other forms of art, usually visual art. In this workshop, we will explore Exphrasis - reading Ekphrasitic poems by well-known and not-so-well-known poets, and trying our own writing in this genre. All the while, we will be surrounded by Old Masters' paintings from the 16th through 19th centuries and Nigerian art and artifacts, as well as more modern works. We will take some of our inspiration from these works, and some from the participants' favorite artwork from outside the art center. The emphasis will be on generating new poems and bringing them to the group for sharing, discussion and gentle critique. The class will culminate with a reading (optional) on Sept. 24th, 2:30 - 4 pm at the Nemeth Art Center, as part of Park Rapids' annual Art Leap event, and some poems may be hung next to the artwork that inspired the poem. This class is for adults and teens 17 or older.
