The Nite to Unite event, which aims to build relationships between law enforcement and the community, is planned for Aug. 4 in Akeley.
Akeley Police Chief Jimmy Hansen gave the city council an update at their June 10 meeting.
“We want to move ahead with it, especially now since the governor has rolled back some of the restrictions,” he said. “I’m thinking by August he’s probably going to be rolling back more if we don’t go the other way, which I hope we don’t. Let’s make it as big of an event as we can.”
Hansen said they are looking at a local food vendor who will follow all COVID-19 protocols to cater food for the event.
“We’d like to enhance the event this year,” Hansen said. “I’ve been working with Peg Davies to have something special for the youth in our community since everything else has been cancelled.”

“I like the idea of making the event bigger,” council member Billy Krotzer said. “I think we should have a committee work on it that includes members of the fire department to work out a budget and plan the event together.”
“We put 100 percent of whatever money is raised back to the kids,” Hansen said. “I think meeting together is a good idea, especially due to the circumstances this year. It would be good to have everyone’s input.”
Akeley City Clerk Kristi Kath said there is currently $3,650 in the Night to Unite account to be used for this year’s event, including money contributed by the Akeley Chamber of Commerce, Lions and Eastern Hubbard County Fire Department. The committee will determine if any additional funds need to be raised.
